(AUSTIN, Texas – Aug. 8, 2024) – Today, the Texas Hospital Association issued the following statement in response to Gov. Greg Abbot’s executive order and news release announcing a new requirement for Texas hospitals. The order aims to require Texas hospitals to collect information regarding patients who are not lawfully present in the United States who use hospitals for inpatient and emergency care, and to report health care costs incurred as a result.

“This would be a new requirement, and we are reviewing it as quickly as possible. Right now, hospitals don’t ask about patient immigration status as a condition of treatment. Hospitals are required by law to provide life-saving treatment to anyone, regardless of ability to pay or status.”
