Dr. Liu also serves on the editorial board of the Cardio-Oncology Journal, has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is an inventor on patents that led to a clinical-stage chemo-protection drug development.

Welela Tereffe, M.D. has been named chief medical executive at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr, Tereffe currently serves as MD Anderson’s chief medical officer, a position she has held for two years.

Jackie Ward, DNP, MSN, RN was named chief nursing officer of Texas Children’s Hospital. Previously, Ward served as associate chief nursing officer at Texas Children’s. She has been with the hospital for 27 years.

Erin Bird, M.D., has been named chief medical officer of AdventHealth Central Texas in Killeen and AdventHealth Rollins Brook in Lampasas. Previously, Dr. Bird served as division director of urology and vice chair of surgery at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, Texas.

Jorge Leal, FACHE, has been named CEO of Laredo Medical Center. Previously, Leal served as Chief Operating Officer at LMC. Leal also serves on the Texas Hospital Association’s Council on Policy Development.

Ascension Seton has launched a cardio-oncology program in Austin. Cardio-oncology is an emerging field in both oncology and cardiology that focuses on the management, mitigation or prevention of cardiovascular disease in cancer patients and cancer survivors.

Dell Children’s Medical Center pediatric heart transplant surgeons successfully performed the hospital’s first heart transplant. Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease at Dell Children’s was established in 2018 and is led by one of the world’s leading pediatric heart surgeons, Dr. Charles Fraser, Jr.

Corpus Christi

Driscoll Children’s Hospital has opened the first pediatric sleep center in South Texas. The center will be used to help evaluate and treat babies, children and young adults who have sleep disorders. Treatment can be done in person at the hospital or via In-Touch, a telehealth platform used in Driscoll’s satellite clinics.

Texas Health Plano earned the Det Norske Veritas Comprehensive Stroke Center certification, one of the highest certifications that U.S. hospitals can achieve. Texas Health Plano is currently just one of 23 hospitals in Texas to achieve this recognition.

Memorial Hermann Life Flight® launched the nation’s first air ambulance service for K-9s. The program provides K-9 handlers with emergency care training for their K-9s. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of police K-9 fatalities. Law enforcement K-9s in need of critical medical care will be transported to participating veterinary hospitals

Midland Memorial Hospital has received the Mission Lifeline NSTEMI Gold Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures. The American Heart Association awarded Midland Memorial Hospital for meeting specific criteria and standards of performance as well as providing appropriate treatment to NSTEMI heart attack patients.
