What Happened? Patient Safety and Risk Management Tips Through Case Studies

It’s designed to help hospital staff understand and comply with federal regulations, including those required for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement. Topics include infection control, QAPI, medical staff, nursing services, patient rights, and more. The program will also cover updates from 2020 through 2025, including areas where interpretive guidelines and survey procedures are still pending.


Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Conditions of Participation: Ensuring Compliance 2026

This ten-part webinar series will guide CAHs through the CMS Conditions of Participation (CoP) found in Appendix W, with special focus on commonly cited areas like Patient Rights. Although the CAH manual lacks a dedicated Patient Rights section, hospitals are still required to ensure a safe environment and uphold all patient rights. The series will address recent regulatory changes, including infection control, QAPI, and discharge planning, as well as areas with missing interpretive guidelines. It also covers key compliance topics such as nursing care plans, medication management, informed consent, and required policies and procedures.

This two-part webinar series will review the CMS Conditions of Participation and Interpretive Guidelines related to EMTALA, which apply to hospitals with emergency departments and those with specialized capabilities. It will cover all twelve EMTALA tag numbers, plus additional guidance on on-call physicians and community care plans. The program will also discuss a landmark case that expanded hospital and practitioner liability under EMTALA. With ongoing legislation, hospitals can expect increased scrutiny, fines, and deficiencies related to EMTALA compliance.

This ten-part on-demand seminar series will cover a majority of the CMS Hospital CoP manual – Appendix A. Every hospital that accepts payment for Medicare and Medicaid patients must comply with the Conditions of Participation. The manual has interpretive guidelines that must be followed for all patients treated in the hospital or hospital owned departments. This program will include the 2020 changes, 2023 and 2024 updates and where some of the gaps continue – absence of interpretive guidelines and survey procedures, and any recent updates.

Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) must comply with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Conditions of Participation located in Appendix W in the manual. This nine-part on-demand webinar series will cover the CAH CoP manual. Included is a 2-hour program on Patient Rights – one of the most cited segments of the Manual. The CAH Manual does not include a specific section on Patient Rights as does the Acute manual; but hospitals must provide a safe environment for patients and method to ensure all patient rights are met.

Every hospital that has a dedicated emergency department and accepts Medicare and Medicaid payment must follow the federal law and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Conditions of Participation Interpretive Guidelines on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). Hospitals without such emergency departments must comply with EMTALA if they have specialized capabilities. This 2-part on-demand webinar will cover the regulations and interpretive guidelines regarding EMTALA.
