Nichols has established himself as one of the most articulate, informed and passionate voices in the health care reform debate. Director of the health policy program for the Washington, D.C.-based New America Foundation, Nichols is a highly sought-after speaker and one which THA members will be talking about long after the conference.

Nichols’ keynote session opens the 2010 Leadership Conference, the perfect kick-off to two days of hard-hitting discussion on balancing cost, quality and access. The New America Foundation aims to expand health insurance coverage to all Americans while reining in costs and improving the efficiency of the overall health care system.

Comparative effectiveness research evaluates the impact of different medical options for treating a given medical condition for a particular set of patients. The research may compare competing drugs, devices or therapeutic options for disease management to determine which one works best. Health care workforce shortages are a growing challenge for hospitals. They face a growing demand for health care professionals, coupled with insufficient capacity in educational programs and recruitment/retention challenges. Benefit from this panel discussion on what’s working to attract, and retain, the best and brightest. The Oklahoma Health Care Workforce Center has been a national leader in addressing workforce issues for not only nurses but also allied health professionals, and Texas hospitals can learn from that experience. Hear about the Texas Board of Nursing’s educational/practice initiatives such as curriculum/clinical lab experiences, simulation and its proposed patient safety pilots. You’ll learn about problems associated with fatigue and fitness for duty, and best practices used in both urban and rural hospitals to implement the prohibition of mandatory overtime from Senate Bill 476. In addition, find out how hospital human resources administrators can address the safety gap between education and practice for nursing and other allied health care professionals.

Congress is looking to accountable care organizations as a way to save money and increase quality, and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission continues to consider how to incorporate the concept into the Medicare program. In this session, you will learn about accountable care organizations, and what kinds of organizations can be ACOs. The panel will discuss barriers to closer integration, how clinical integration can lead to aligned incentives between hospitals and physicians and whether Texas has the right model for physician/hospital relationships.

"Tribute to Texas Health Care Leaders"

This special annual luncheon pays tribute to Texas health care heroes. During the luncheon, the prestigious Earl M. Collier Award for Distinguished Health Care Administration, Pioneer Award and THA Excellence in Community Service Award are presented. In addition, the Texas Organization of Nurse Executives and the Texas Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration and Education will honor recipients of their Excellence in Leadership Awards, and the HOSPAC Star Award recipient and long-time members of THA and AHA are recognized.
