Resources for Hosting a Legislative Visit

The 81st Texas Legislature convenes in Austin on Jan. 13, and members will spend the next 140 days addressing a myriad of issues. With the economic downturn, the state’s projected budget surplus no longer exists, so securing additional and adequate funding for health care programs will be an uphill battle.

The single most important thing to do in preparation for the upcoming session is to build or strengthen your relationships with your elected officials. Texas hospitals are encouraged to make personal contact with their Texas Senate and House members. Having legislators visit hospitals will make THA’s key issues real, and demonstrate the local impact of public policies.

If you already know your elected officials, strengthen that relationship. It is critical that hospital leaders position themselves as trustworthy, knowledgeable resources on health care and hospital issues.
