Texas Should Stay the Course on Nursing Education

The Texas Legislature invested $49.7 million in special funding for nursing education in 2009, and the money was a sound investment. First-year enrollment in nursing schools grew 15.8 percent from academic year 2009 to 2010, and total enrollment in nursing schools increased 12 percent for the same period. Graduates increased 10.8 percent.

Yet Texas still has a serious shortage of registered nurses…and more are needed to meet the demands of a fast-growing and aging population. Texas must not lose the progress made in increasing the number of nursing graduates. Lawmakers should stay the course and continue funding nursing education!
