(Washington, D.C. – May 19, 2014) – The Texas Hospital Association presented Rep. John Zerwas (R- Simonton) today with the Texas Hospital Advocacy Tribute Award in recognition of his commitment to and legislative work on behalf of good hospital and health care policy.
The award honors state legislators and other public officials who have been supportive of issues important to hospitals and health systems. Rep. Zerwas received the award during a special presentation with Houston-area health care leaders at a reception today in Houston.
“Rep. Zerwas’ commitment to good health care policy and his pragmatic approach to tackling the toughest political issues are to be applauded,” said Ted Shaw, THA president/chief executive officer. “His work in the 83rd Legislature to secure adequate funding for Texas health care services and to expand graduate medical education in the state demonstrate his commitment to the people of District 28 as well as a resolve to do what is right for patients and Texas hospitals.”
His professional experience as a physician gave Rep. Zerwas invaluable insight into the needs of patients, hospitals and providers in the 83rd Texas Legislature where he served as chair of the subcommittee on health and human services and was the main architect of the state’s health and human services budget.
This is the third time Rep. Zerwas has received THA’s Advocacy Tribute Award. He also received it in 2009 and 2011.
Rep. Zerwas was first elected to the Texas House in 2006 and represents northwest Fort Bend County. He holds a doctor of medicine degree from the Baylor College of Medicine and has practiced as an anesthesiologist for more than 30 years.
